2018 Naval Academy and Livorno International sailing week

The “2018 Naval Academy and Livorno International sailing week” will be held from 20 April to 1 May as presented during a press conference aboard the Italian Ship Vespucci.  The head of culture and tourism for the municipality of Livorno, Francesco Belais, Pierpaolo Ribuffo,  Superintendent of the Academy and Dr. Andrea Mazzoni, the Leghorn sailing clubs’ representative, revealed the races and events planned for the “2018 Naval Academy and Livorno International Sailing Week.”

The competition will be divided into 11 different racing classes (16 Trident, Optimist, Laser bugs, Windsurfer, IOM and Marblehead, 2.4 Mr and Martin 16, J24, Altura, Star and Vele d’epoca). One of the new events introduced this year is the “Naval Academy Regatta,” ceremonially announced at a press conference: Captain Gianguido Manganaro, the President of the Naval Academy sailing team, and Gianluca Conti, the President of the Livorno Yacht Club presented the “challenge glove” to the Presidents of the Italian Yacht Club, Santo Stefano Yacht Club and the Circolo Canottieri Aniene. This is an offshore race of over 600 nautical miles in five days, covering the track from Livorno – Giraglia – Giglio Island –Iisland of Ventotene.

Also this year, the Naval Academy, in collaboration with Circolo Velico Antignano and Lega Italiana Vela (LIV), will organize the “Naval Academies Regatta”, an International Regatta involving several foreign naval academies, continuing last year’s format involving the at-sea crew rotation.  The race course will be near the famous Terrazza Mascagni.

Pietro Boerio Marzotto, project manager for the company #SapereAude Soc con a.r.l., presented the all-Italian ecological project starring the 950 class and the Navy sailing department to create a prototype built by the Mostes shipyard of Genoa and designed by the engineer Paolo Cori.

There is also an initiative to promote the sea with an art contest called “The Sea and Sails,” organized in collaboration with the newspaper “Il Tirreno.” Reserved for primary and Secondary Level schools, the works selected will be exhibited in the “Cadet’s Gallery” at the Naval Academy. The 2018 Edition of the “City of Livorno Naval Academy and International Sailing Week” will address solidarity in social issues by partnering with Unicef and the Fondazione Francesca Rava-NPH Italy Onlus.
